16-Day's Ethiopia Adventure Tour Itinerary

Day 1 – Arrival in Addis Ababa

Welcome to Ethiopia!

The Ethiopian Eco Tours team will meet you at Bole International Airport and transfer you to your hotel.

Your first day will be dedicated to relaxing and adjusting to the Ethiopian climate in Addis Ababa.

In the evening, we will visit one of the city’s traditional cultural restaurants, where you will enjoy authentic Ethiopian music and cuisine.

Day 2 – Full-Day Addis Ababa City Tour

Today you will explore the cultural and historical highlights of Addis Ababa.

We begin with a visit to the National Museum of Ethiopia, one of the most important museums in Sub-Saharan Africa. Among its most famous exhibits are the 3.2-million-year-old remains of “Lucy,” one of the earliest human ancestors ever discovered.

The museum also features a rich collection of imperial and religious artifacts, traditional clothing, and musical instruments. Ancient exhibits include relics from the era of the Queen of Sheba discovered in the Axum region and present-day Eritrea.

Our next stop will be the Ethnological Museum, located within Addis Ababa University. The museum is particularly famous for its collection of Ethiopian crosses, religious icons, and traditional musical instruments.

Lunch will be served at the famous Ambassador Restaurant, where you will enjoy traditional Ethiopian dishes.

In the afternoon, we will drive up Mount Entoto, located at 3,200 meters above sea level, where you will enjoy panoramic views of Addis Ababa. Before Emperor Menelik II moved the capital to Addis Ababa, Entoto served as Ethiopia’s imperial capital. The former royal palace still stands today, and the local museum displays royal crowns, church artifacts, traditional clothing, and historical symbols.

The final stop of the day will be Merkato, considered the largest open-air market in Africa.

Day 3 – Addis Ababa – Jinka – Turmi

Early in the morning, we will transfer to Bole International Airport for a domestic flight to Jinka. The Ethiopian Eco Tours team will accompany you during the journey.

Upon arrival, we will visit the Mursi village. The Mursi are among the most famous tribes of the Omo Valley and are well known for the unique lip plates traditionally worn by women.

In the afternoon, we will visit a Hamer village, famous for its colorful body decorations and jewelry. Depending on the season, we may also experience traditional cultural ceremonies.

Day 4 – Dasanech Tribe and Karo Tribe

After breakfast, we will drive to visit the Dasanech tribe after crossing the Omo River by traditional boat.

The Dasanech are nomadic pastoralists living on the western banks of the Omo River near the Kenyan border.

After returning from the Dasanech village and enjoying lunch at the lodge, we will continue to visit the Karo tribe.

The Karo people, who live along the Omo River, are masters of traditional face and body painting. Before ceremonies and dances, they decorate themselves using colorful natural pigments, minerals, flowers, white chalk, and charcoal.

The men also style their hair with red clay prepared over several days.

Day 5 – Drive to Konso

After breakfast, we will travel through breathtaking landscapes and stop at one of the ancient Konso villages.

The Konso Cultural Landscape is recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The Konso people are famous for their impressive agricultural terraces and carved wooden grave statues.

You will also enjoy tasting traditional local coffee.

Day 6 – Drive to Arba Minch

After breakfast, we continue our journey toward Arba Minch through the beautiful scenery of southern Ethiopia.

Upon arrival, you will have time to relax and enjoy the peaceful atmosphere of the area.

Day 7 – Arba Minch Forest and Dorze Village

In the morning, we will explore the beautiful Arba Minch forest, known for its towering trees and natural springs.

Although it is impossible to see all of the famous Forty Springs, we will visit some of the most scenic areas.

Later in the afternoon, we will drive north to the mountain village of Chencha, located along the Great Rift Valley escarpment.

This is the home of the Dorze people, who are renowned for their weaving traditions and tall bamboo houses shaped like beehives.

Day 8 – Lake Chamo and Drive to Halala Kela Eco Lodge

Early in the morning, we will enjoy a boat trip on Lake Chamo to see some of the largest crocodiles in Africa, hippos, and many beautiful bird species.

After the boat excursion, we will drive through the spectacular green landscapes of southern Ethiopia toward Halala Kela Eco Lodge.

Day 9 – Drive to Chebera Churchura National Park

After breakfast, we will drive from Arba Minch to Chebera Churchura National Park. The journey itself is part of the adventure, offering stunning and diverse landscapes along the way.

In the afternoon, we will arrive at the park area, check into the eco-lodge or campsite, and meet the local ranger or guide who will accompany us during our stay.

You will receive an introduction to the park and its wildlife.

In the evening, there will be an opportunity for a short nature walk or game drive to observe wildlife during sunset.

Overnight at Chebera Churchura Lodge.

Day 10 – Full-Day Safari in Chebera Churchura National Park

Enjoy a full-day guided safari or nature walk focused on spotting elephants, buffaloes, hippos, and a wide variety of bird species.

We will also explore the Zigna River area and visit unique attractions such as waterfalls, volcanic craters, and hot springs located inside the park.

In the evening, relax while enjoying the sounds of the wilderness, with an optional short sunset game drive before dinner.

Overnight at Chebera Churchura Lodge.

 

Day 11 – Morning Activity and Drive to Jimma for Flight to Addis Ababa.

In the morning, enjoy a short safari or nature walk to observe wildlife and scenic viewpoints that may have been missed during previous days.

After breakfast, we will begin the drive to Jimma for your return flight to Addis Ababa.

Day 12 – Flight from Addis Ababa to Semera – Drive to Erta Ale

You will take an early morning flight at approximately 6:45 AM to Semera, the capital of the Afar Region, to begin your Danakil Depression adventure.

A vehicle will meet you at the airport and transfer you into town for breakfast.

We then begin a 220 km drive to Afdera, a town near the salt lake, where we will stop for lunch.

In the afternoon, we continue another 60 km to Erta Ale, where we will camp near the active volcano.

After dinner, you will enjoy a short trek to the volcano crater to witness the active lava lake before returning to camp.

Accommodation at Erta Ale will be camping in tents or sleeping under the stars on mattresses.

Transportation throughout the Danakil Depression will be by 4WD jeep.

Day 13 – Erta Ale – Ahmed Ela

After breakfast, we drive toward Ahmed Ela through rugged desert roads in one of the harshest environments on Earth.

Despite the extreme conditions, the landscapes are extraordinary, filled with stunning mineral colors and dramatic scenery.

The Danakil Depression contains areas more than 116 meters below sea level, where temperatures can rise above 40°C.

In the evening, enjoy a spectacular sunset and swim in the natural saltwater pools before returning to camp.

Accommodation at Ahmed Ela or Dallol will be camping in tents or sleeping under the stars on mattresses.

Transportation by 4WD jeep.

 

Day 14 – Ahmed Ela – Semera

Today we explore Dallol, located approximately 120 meters below sea level and considered one of the lowest and hottest places on Earth.

You will visit the colorful salt mines and extraordinary geothermal landscapes.

After the excursion, we return to Ahmed Ela and continue driving to Semera or Mekele for a flight back to Addis Ababa.

Transportation in Addis Ababa will be by tourist minibus.

 

Day 15 – Addis Ababa Cultural Experience

After breakfast, we will visit the former palace of Emperor Haile Selassie, which has been transformed into one of Ethiopia’s most impressive museums. Inside the museum, you will see royal vehicles, carriages, imperial clothing, and many other historical treasures.

In the afternoon, we will visit local markets for shopping and cultural exploration.

In the evening, we will enjoy traditional Ethiopian music and dance performances at the famous Yod Abyssinia Cultural Restaurant.

Day 16 – Departure

According to your international flight schedule, you will be transferred to the airport for your departure flight home.

A detailed travel agreement will be sent after registration, and guests are kindly requested to read and sign the contract.
