16-Day Ethiopia Cultural, Tribal & Historical Adventure Tour

Day 1 – Arrival in Addis Ababa

Welcome to Ethiopia!

The Ethiopian Eco Tours team will meet you at Bole International Airport and transfer you to your hotel.

Your first day will be dedicated to relaxing and acclimatizing to the Ethiopian climate in Addis Ababa.

In the evening, we will visit one of the city’s traditional cultural restaurants, where you will enjoy authentic Ethiopian cuisine, music, and dance performances.

Day 2 – Full-Day Addis Ababa City Tour

Today you will discover the cultural and historical highlights of Ethiopia’s capital city.

We begin with a visit to the National Museum of Ethiopia, one of the most important museums in Sub-Saharan Africa. Among its most famous exhibits are the 3.2-million-year-old remains of “Lucy,” one of the oldest and most significant human ancestors ever discovered.

The museum also houses a remarkable collection of imperial and religious artifacts, traditional clothing, musical instruments, and historical treasures from the era of the Queen of Sheba discovered in the Axum region and present-day Eritrea.

Our next stop will be the Ethnological Museum, located within Addis Ababa University and originally established with the support of Polish scholars. The museum is especially renowned for its impressive collection of Ethiopian crosses, religious icons, and traditional musical instruments.

Lunch will be served at the famous Ambassador Restaurant, where you will enjoy traditional Ethiopian dishes.

In the afternoon, we will drive up Mount Entoto, situated at an elevation of 3,200 meters above sea level, offering breathtaking panoramic views of Addis Ababa. Before Emperor Menelik II moved the capital to Addis Ababa, Entoto served as the center of the Ethiopian Empire. The former royal palace still stands today, and the local museum displays royal crowns, church treasures, traditional garments, and imperial artifacts.

The final stop of the day will be Merkato, considered the largest open-air market in Africa.

Day 3 – Addis Ababa – Jinka – Turmi

Early in the morning, we will transfer to Bole International Airport for a domestic flight to Jinka. The Ethiopian Eco Tours team will accompany you throughout the journey.

Upon arrival, we will visit the famous Mursi tribe village. The Mursi are among the best-known ethnic groups of the Omo Valley and are particularly famous for the traditional lip plates worn by women.

In the afternoon, we will visit a Hamer village, known for its colorful body decorations, jewelry, and rich cultural traditions. Depending on the season, we may also have the opportunity to witness traditional ceremonies and cultural activities.

Day 4 – Dasanech Tribe and Karo Tribe

After breakfast, we will travel to visit the Dasanech tribe after crossing the Omo River by traditional boat.

The Dasanech are nomadic pastoralists living along the western banks of the Omo River near the Kenyan border.

After returning from the Dasanech village and enjoying lunch at the lodge, we will continue to visit the Karo tribe.

The Karo people, who live along the banks of the Omo River, are famous for their extraordinary face and body painting traditions. Before ceremonies and dances, they decorate themselves using colorful natural pigments, minerals, flowers, white chalk, and charcoal.

The men also style their hair with red clay prepared over several days.

Day 5 – Konso and Drive to Arba Minch

After breakfast, we will journey through beautiful landscapes and stop at one of the ancient Konso villages.

The Konso Cultural Landscape is recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The Konso people are famous for their remarkable agricultural terraces and carved wooden grave markers.

You will also enjoy tasting the region’s traditional local coffee.

Day 6 – Drive to Arba Minch – Forest Exploration and Dorze Village

In the morning, we will drive to Arba Minch.

After lunch, we will explore the beautiful Arba Minch forest, known for its giant trees and natural springs. Although it is impossible to visit all the springs, we will explore some of the most scenic areas.

Later in the afternoon, we will continue north to the mountain village of Chencha, located along the Great Rift Valley escarpment.

Chencha is home to the Dorze people, who are famous for their weaving traditions and distinctive bamboo houses shaped like beehives.

Day 7 – Lake Chamo and Drive to Halala Kela Eco Lodge

Early in the morning, we will enjoy a boat trip on Lake Chamo, where you will see some of the largest crocodiles in Africa, hippos, and many beautiful bird species.

After the boat excursion, we will drive through the spectacular green landscapes of southern Ethiopia toward Halala Kela Eco Lodge.

Day 8 – Drive to Chebera Churchura National Park

After breakfast, we will depart from Halala Kela and drive toward Chebera Churchura National Park. The journey itself is part of the adventure, offering magnificent and diverse scenery along the way.

In the afternoon, we will arrive at the park area, check into the eco-lodge, and meet the local ranger or guide who will accompany us during our stay.

You will receive an introduction to the park and its wildlife.

In the evening, there will be an opportunity for a short nature walk or a sunset game drive to observe wildlife during dusk.

Overnight at Chebera Churchura Lodge.

 

Day 9 – Full-Day Safari in Chebera Churchura National Park

Enjoy a full-day guided safari and nature exploration focused on spotting elephants, buffaloes, hippos, and a wide variety of bird species.

We will also explore the Zigna River area and visit unique attractions such as waterfalls, volcanic craters, and hot springs located within the park.

In the evening, relax and enjoy the peaceful sounds of the African wilderness, with an optional sunset game drive before dinner.

Overnight at Chebera Churchura Lodge.

 

Day 10 – Morning Activity and Return to Addis Ababa

In the morning, enjoy a short safari or nature walk to discover wildlife and scenic viewpoints that may have been missed during previous excursions.

After breakfast, we will begin our journey to Jimma for your evening flight back to Addis Ababa.

Day 11 – Flight to Gondar

After your connecting flight from Addis Ababa, the Ethiopian Eco Tours team will welcome you at Gondar Airport.

Following lunch, we will begin a historical tour of the Royal Enclosure, a UNESCO World Heritage Site featuring five magnificent castles built by Ethiopian emperors during the 17th century.

These castles survived several wars, including aerial bombardments during World War II.

We will also visit the famous Debre Birhan Selassie Church, renowned for its stunning religious artwork and iconic angel-covered ceiling.

Overnight at Goha Hotel or Haile Resort Gondar.

Transportation in Gondar will be provided by tourist minibus.

Day 12 – Day Trip to the Simien Mountains

Today we will drive from Gondar to Debark, the gateway to the Simien Mountains National Park.

Here we will obtain park permits and meet the local scout who will accompany us during the trek.

After enjoying tea or coffee, and possibly visiting the local market if time permits, we will continue to the park entrance located approximately 16 kilometers from Debark.

We will proceed to Ras Buwait, one of the most spectacular viewpoints in the park.

From there, we will hike for approximately two hours to Chilikwanit, one of the most scenic areas in the Simien Mountains.

Along the trail, we will encounter groups of endemic Gelada baboons and observe them up close. Other wildlife may include jackals, ravens, eagles, and various endemic plant species.

After the excursion, our vehicle will meet us at Chilikwanit and transfer us back to Gondar.

Overnight at Goha Hotel or Haile Resort Gondar.

Transportation will be by 4WD jeep.

 

Day 13 – Flight to Lalibela

Your flight to Lalibela will depart late in the morning, arriving around midday.

Our driver will meet you at the airport and transfer you to your lodge.

In the afternoon, after lunch, we will begin exploring the famous rock-hewn churches of Lalibela. There are eleven churches in total, and during this visit we will explore most of them.

Day 14 – Continued Exploration of Lalibela

After breakfast, we will continue visiting the remaining rock-hewn churches of Lalibela.

Following lunch, we will stroll through the charming streets of Lalibela and participate in a traditional Ethiopian coffee ceremony, where you will experience the aroma of freshly roasted coffee and the unique Ethiopian coffee culture.

Overnight at Sora Lodge, Lalibela.

 

Day 15 – Flight Back to Addis Ababa

After breakfast and check-out from the lodge, we will transfer to Lalibela Airport for your late morning flight back to Addis Ababa.

Upon arrival, our driver will transfer you to your hotel.

In the evening, we will take you to one of Addis Ababa’s famous cultural restaurants or clubs, where you will enjoy traditional Ethiopian music and dance performances.

Day 16 – Departure

According to your international flight schedule, you will be transferred to the airport for your departure flight home.

A detailed travel agreement will be sent after registration, and guests are kindly requested to read and sign the contract.
